Look out from your windshield. You’re not in your car, you say? I’m not talking about that windshield. I’m talking about that experiential front line between what’s inside you and what’s outside you. The view from the driver’s seat of this vehicle of blood and meat. Just as its obvious when you’re driving that you’re not your car, it should be just as obvious to all of us highly experienced drivers that we are not our bodies.
Our bodies are not designed to withstand the excruciating pressure from the depths of the ocean, that’s why whenever we visit that environment, we have to encase ourselves in a diving bell or submarine in order to withstand the crushing pressure. Our bodies are well-designed for the environment that they occupy, but once again they are only vehicles that allow us to occupy the equally crushing environment of existing moment by moment with no knowledge of whatever precipice might lie right in front of us and only a memory of what lies right behind.
We are eternal beings with no beginning and no end and we are completely omniscient. And that is so fucking boring that we have concocted a mechanism whereby we can experience the sublime nature of not knowing. This is not the same as ignorance which has its roots in thinking you know when you do not. Knowing that you do not know creates an ecstatic state. The whole reason we came to this four-dimensional backwater to escape eternity’s cloying perfection.
But when you forget the limitations of life are a treat, you may think them a trick. And the lack of certainty lends more credence to the dark than the light. You chose the costume for this Halloween of your soul. So don’t get freaked out when you look in the mirror, just be grateful that you’re not roaming eternity in the driver’s seat of certainty’s Land Rover, but you’re out here where the wild things are.
