Your Fair Share

What’s good for everybody.

That’s what we say we want, but what is good for everybody?

And what if it’s not good for you?

Then it isn’t good for everybody, but that’s not what we mean.

It’s a declaration, but to whom?

For ourselves or the other people in this room of ten billion souls?

Who each have their stories, but they’re all full of holes

Because our inner voices are unreliable narrators.

Some of them ring true, but others are impersonators

who sometimes sound more like us than us.

And it’s highly problematic when you can’t even trust yourself to do what’s in your best interest

Let alone be able to nurture anything more than a crippling anxiety

That paralyzes me to the extent that it justifies itself.

My anxiety really is something to be anxious about.

And I know that everybody has had their fair share, and that’s not good for anybody.

Cortisol, the stress chemical, is not good for any body.
